Burmese Days

Stephen Ashton

Part memoir, part historical inquiry

Burmese Days situates personal experience within the broader landscape of late twentieth-century Burma. Based on visits between 1985 and 1999, and a private Burmese government visit to London in 1986, the book traces the author's engagement with the country through historical research, diplomatic encounters and personal exchange.

A central theme is the unresolved question of Aung San's assassination in 1947, explored through archival material and informed speculation. Combining the historian's perspective with first-hand experience, Ashton offers a rare insight into a country with a troubled history.
