Logline

A spirited woman fleeing an abusive husband in Genoa finds passion and power in the orbit of a Medici prince, but in the treacherous courts of Florence she must outwit scandal and vengeance to keep both her freedom and her love.

Synopsis

In narrow, sea scented Genoese streets, Livia Vernazza lives the life expected of a merchant's daughter. Her marriage to wealthy but cruel Signor Ricci is arranged to secure family fortunes. Behind the shutters, his temper and control turn their home into a prison. Livia's quick wit and hunger for knowledge are met with suspicion and violence. The more she tries to please him, the more volatile he becomes.

After one beating leaves her half dead, Livia realises that obedience will not save her. With help from a loyal maid and a sympathetic priest, she fakes a drowning during a night storm and disappears, leaving behind nothing but a shawl and the assumption that she has taken her own life. Smuggled onto a coastal vessel, she travels under a false name towards Florence, carrying only a few coins and a fierce determination never to belong to any man again.

Florence is a revelation. Livia arrives in a city of palaces, galleries and whispered plots. She finds work as a companion to an ageing noblewoman who introduces her to the world of salons and patronage. Determined to secure her own position, Livia listens more than she speaks, absorbing the rhythms of court life and the intricate dance between power, art and reputation.

At a masked ball she meets Don Giovanni de’ Medici, a soldier and scholar with an ambiguous place in his powerful family. Drawn to her intelligence and sharp honesty, Giovanni quickly sees through her assumed identity. Instead of exposing her, he is intrigued. Their conversations move from polite banter to late night exchanges on war, faith and the role of women in a world built by men.

As their relationship deepens, Livia begins to trust him, allowing moments of vulnerability to break through her carefully constructed facade. Yet the court is a dangerous place for any woman, and doubly so for one with a secret past. A lady in waiting who once vied for Giovanni's attention starts to dig into Livia's origins. A Genoese trader recognises her in a market square. Rumours begin to swirl about the mysterious newcomer who has captured a Medici's heart.

When word reaches Genoa that a woman resembling Livia has been seen in Florence, her supposedly widowed husband travels south, fuelled by wounded pride and a desire to reclaim what he sees as his property. At the same time Giovanni faces pressure from his family to make a politically advantageous match. The romance that seemed like Livia's salvation now threatens to expose her and drag her back into the life she risked everything to escape.

The climax unfolds during a public celebration where all the key players are present. Livia must use every scrap of cunning and courage to outmanoeuvre Ricci, protect Giovanni from scandal and negotiate terms with the Medici matriarch who effectively rules Florence from behind velvet curtains. The choices she makes will determine whether she remains a pawn in other people's games or becomes the author of her own fate.

The story closes with Livia walking the galleries of Florence on her own terms, surrounded by paintings and sculptures that once seemed to belong to another world. The love she has fought for is not presented as a fairy tale ending but as a hard won partnership forged in truth rather than illusion. In a time when women were expected to be silent, Livia Vernazza has carved out a life where her voice and her heart both matter.
